![]() THE CRAFT by Shan Morgain, priestess of the Craft. page 8
Craft leaders establish by skill or resources, not by status. Craft leadership grows out of what others feel about a leader’s usefulness. There is no test or ordeal to becoming a Craft leader. It cannot be achieved by will, training or effort. Craft leadership is something received from others, not something won or taken. A Craft leader cannot make someone else a Craft leader by their own decision. Leadership must grow. A Craft leader has no power of command. They can advise, and teach, and help. Where they do not approve of someone’s behaviour they can withhold their work. It is for each Craft leader and their gathering to decide together if they will include a guest, and whether someone fits their group or not. There is no need for any titles or ceremonial behaviour towards a Craft leader. Using these games is unhelpful as they create status for the wrong reasons. Titles of affection chosen by others are less destructive, but need monitoring for their effect. Although a Craft leader is not exaggerated by title or status, they expect to be taken seriously. Invitations to their Circle, or to meet with them, are important, and cause serious offence if not treated with the greatest of courtesy. A Craft leader may act as a quiet guardian of the Craft without leading a group for long periods, or stay apart from society permanently. In that case they must share their Craft with one other before they die. A Craft leader may retire from leadership work to renew their own needs but they will inevitably be called back to the work when they are fit for it. A Craft leader can be celibate or they may have lovers, or they may partner and have children. In their early parenting years they need more help with their work for the work draws on the same powers as childcare. A Craft leader lives an ordinary life with an ordinary way of making a living. They do not make a living from the Craft. A great deal of being a Craft leader is expressed in ordinary acts, mutual help around family life or personal struggles, or in achieving creative work – a craft.
