in Newport, Wales. The main house was built in 1580 by a branch of the same Morgan family who built the famous Tredegar House. A particularly famous member of the family was Henry Morgan the pirate buccaneer! Local tradition speaks of an much more ancient Celtic longhouse here long before the Morgan family built their manor on the crest of the Tudor economic boom. The site here on high ground near the junction of two rivers would have made it a natural place for a chieftain to place a settlement. ![]() The house in 1860 by a contemporary artist (as "Crindau House") Sadly over the centuries the original features of the Tudor manor have largely disappeared. A fire in the 19th century further damaged the interior so that by the 20th century what was left was still solid and spacious, but mainly Victorian. In 1926 the manor house was split in two halves. One half continued as 'Crindau House' and continues still to this day as a delightfully kept private house. The other half (ours) was used as a workingmen's club. The club added enormous extensions to the ground floor in the early 1970s. After a vigorous period as a club, use of this half of the original manor dwindled until by 2007 it was much neglected. Shan bought it in April 2007 and began renovating it as House Morgain. ![]() House Morgain thanks Kim and CUPS members for their huge work input.
